Oberhausen's air quality reflects its position at the heart of the Rhine-Ruhr conurbation's former industrial core, with the legacy of steel and chemical manufacturing combined with heavy traffic on the A2 and A42 motorway corridors generating elevated NO₂ and PM2.5. The flat Ruhr basin provides reasonable wind dispersal on westerly days, but the industrial density of the surrounding conurbation maintains above-average European pollution levels and Oberhausen's refinery and chemical legacy keeps localised elevated background readings throughout the year.
