Mülheim's air quality reflects its position in the Rhine-Ruhr conurbation on the Ruhr river, with vehicle traffic on the A40 and the legacy of steel and chemical manufacturing in the surrounding Ruhr industrial corridor generating elevated NO₂ and PM2.5. The flat Ruhr basin provides reasonable wind dispersal on westerly days, while the industrial density of the surrounding conurbation maintains above-average European pollution levels, and the Ruhr river valley creates modest topographic variation compared to the completely flat northern Ruhr plain.
