Lingen's air quality reflects the flat Emsland peat landscape in Lower Saxony's northwestern natural gas producing region, with the Kernkraftwerk Emsland nuclear power station and surrounding natural gas extraction infrastructure generating industrial emissions alongside vehicle traffic on the A31 motorway. North Sea westerlies generally provide maritime ventilation, while the flat terrain allows reasonable dispersal and the natural gas extraction operations represent the most distinctive local industrial emission source throughout the year.
