Kerpen's air quality faces significant challenges from the Hambacher Forst lignite open-cast mining complex — one of Europe's largest — and the surrounding RWE coal power stations generating elevated SO₂ and PM2.5 alongside vehicle traffic on the A4. The flat Rhine-Erft basin provides reasonable dispersal on westerly days, while the lignite operations' extraordinary scale makes Kerpen Germany's most distinctively lignite mining-defined urban air quality environment throughout the year.
