Kassel's air quality reflects its position in the Fulda valley in central Germany, with vehicle traffic on the A7 motorway and the surrounding Volkswagen manufacturing and engineering industry in the Kassel-Baunatal corridor contributing elevated NOₓ and PM2.5. The Habichtswald hills to the west and the surrounding Hessian highlands create partial topographic enclosure, while the Fulda valley provides the primary natural ventilation corridor and the flat upper Hessian basin allows reasonable dispersal on most wind days.
