Karlsruhe's air quality reflects its position in the Upper Rhine valley at the heart of the TechnologieRegion Karlsruhe, with vehicle traffic on the A5 and A8 motorway interchange and the Rheinhafen oil refinery contributing elevated NOₓ and SO₂. The Rhine valley provides ventilation on westerly winds, while the Black Forest to the east and the Palatinate Forest to the northwest create partial topographic enclosure that can concentrate emissions under calm winter anticyclonic conditions.
