Iserlohn's air quality reflects the Märkisches Sauerland valley landscape in the southeastern Rhine-Ruhr region, with vehicle traffic on the A46 and the surrounding steel and armaments manufacturing legacy contributing elevated PM2.5 and NOₓ. The Sauerland highlands create more topographic variation than the flat Ruhr plain, concentrating valley emissions under calm conditions, while Atlantic westerlies provide the primary ventilation pathway through the highland terrain.
