Ingolstadt's air quality reflects its position in the Danube valley in central Bavaria, with the Audi automotive headquarters and manufacturing complex generating significant industrial and vehicle testing emissions alongside vehicle traffic on the A9 motorway. The Bavarian Forest to the northeast and the Jura Franconian hills to the north create topographic variation, while the Danube valley provides the primary ventilation corridor and winter temperature inversions can concentrate vehicle and Audi plant emissions in the valley bottom below the surrounding Bavarian uplands.
