Herne's air quality reflects its position at the heart of the Rhine-Ruhr conurbation in the densely industrialised Ruhr-Emscher corridor, with vehicle traffic on the A42 Emschertal motorway and the legacy of coal mining and chemical manufacturing generating elevated PM2.5 and industrial background pollutants. The flat Ruhr basin provides reasonable wind dispersal on westerly days, but the surrounding industrial density of the Bottrop-Herne-Gelsenkirchen corridor maintains consistently elevated European pollution levels throughout the year.
