Heilbronn's air quality reflects its position in the Neckar river valley in northern Baden-Württemberg, with vehicle traffic on the A6 motorway and the surrounding automotive, machinery, and chemicals manufacturing corridor generating elevated NOₓ and PM2.5. The Neckar valley's partial enclosure between the Swabian highlands and the Kraichgau plateau creates topographic concentration under calm conditions, while the Neckar river provides the primary ventilation corridor and the flat northern Baden-Württemberg plain allows reasonable dispersal on prevailing westerly wind days.
