Hamm's air quality reflects its position in the eastern Rhine-Ruhr conurbation, with vehicle traffic on the A1 and A2 motorways and the legacy of coal mining and power generation in the surrounding Ruhr eastern corridor contributing elevated PM2.5 and SO₂. The flat Westphalian plain provides reasonable wind dispersal on most days, while the surrounding industrial complex elevates background pollution above typical western European urban averages, and Hamm's power station legacy maintains localised elevated SO₂ under certain wind directions.
