Halle's air quality reflects its position in the Saale river valley in the German chemical industry heartland, with the legacy of Buna and Leuna chemical plants in the surrounding Saale-Unstrut corridor contributing industrial background pollution alongside vehicle traffic on the A9 and A14 motorways. The flat Saxony-Anhalt plain provides reasonable wind dispersal on most days, while the Merseburg chemical complex to the south remains one of Germany's more significant remaining industrial emission corridors.
