Hagen's air quality reflects its position in the Ruhr-Sieg valley at the southeastern edge of the Rhine-Ruhr conurbation, with vehicle traffic on the A1 and A45 motorways and the legacy of steel and manufacturing industry in the Volme and Ennepe valleys contributing elevated PM2.5. The surrounding Sauerland hills create more topographic variation than the flat Ruhr plain, while the valley geometry concentrates emissions more effectively than open terrain, making Hagen's enclosed valley character a significant local air quality influence.
