Grevenbroich's air quality faces significant challenges from the Neurath and Niederaußem lignite power stations and the Hambach open-cast mining complex in the Rhineland lignite region, generating some of Germany's highest SO₂ concentrations alongside vehicle traffic on the A46. The flat Rhine-Erft basin provides reasonable dispersal on westerly days, while the lignite energy complex's scale makes Grevenbroich one of Germany's most persistently energy generation-influenced urban environments throughout the year.
