Fürth's air quality reflects its position in the Middle Franconian basin adjacent to Nuremberg, sharing the enclosed basin's winter pollution challenge with vehicle traffic on the A73 and the surrounding electronics and manufacturing industry contributing local sources. The Pegnitz and Rednitz river valleys provide limited ventilation corridors, while the Franconian hills surrounding the Nuremberg-Fürth urban agglomeration create topographic enclosure that concentrates emissions under winter temperature inversions, and the two cities' combined traffic and industrial emissions represent a significant bi-city air quality corridor.
