Aschaffenburg's air quality reflects the Main river valley at the edge of the Spessart forest in northern Bavaria, with vehicle traffic on the A3 motorway and surrounding manufacturing industry contributing local sources. The Main valley provides the primary ventilation corridor, while the Spessart uplands create topographic variation and the flat Rhine-Main basin to the west creates occasional inversion episodes that affect the entire Main river corridor.
