Aachen's air quality reflects its position at the heart of the Aachen Basin at the German-Dutch-Belgian triple border, with vehicle traffic on the A4 and A44 motorways and the brown coal Rhenish lignite mining operations in the surrounding Hambach and Inden open-cast mines contributing elevated SO₂ and PM2.5. The surrounding Eifel, Ardennes, and Vennbaan highlands create partial topographic enclosure, while North Sea westerlies provide ventilation and the lignite operations represent the region's most significant industrial emission source.
