Oulu's air quality is excellent by European standards, benefiting from clean Arctic and Baltic airflows that dominate conditions throughout most of the year in this northern Finnish city. The primary concerns are road dust from studded winter tyres contributing elevated PM10 in spring, residential wood burning during the long cold winters adding localised PM2.5, while the surrounding Bothnian Bay and northern Finnish forest provide outstanding clean-air background conditions that make Oulu one of Europe's cleaner major cities year-round.
