Jihlava's air quality reflects the Jihlava river valley in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands watershed at 524 metres, with vehicle traffic on the D1 motorway and the surrounding manufacturing and university operations contributing local sources alongside winter residential wood burning. The Bohemian-Moravian uplands create topographic variation, while the elevated highland watershed position generally provides better background dispersal than the flat Czech Bohemian basin below and winter inversions in the valley are less severe than in the lower-lying Czech cities throughout the year.
