Ostrava's air quality faces some of the EU's most serious industrial air quality challenges, with the ArcelorMittal steelworks and surrounding coking plant complex in the Ostrava-Karviná coal basin generating some of Europe's highest PM2.5, SO₂, and benzo[a]pyrene concentrations. The flat Silesian basin shared with Polish Katowice across the border provides reasonable wind dispersal on most days, but the density of steel and coking operations keeps Ostrava among the Czech Republic's and EU's most persistently polluted cities.

When is air pollution at its worst in Ostrava?

Residents in Ostrava are most likely to spot reduced air quality when oak and birch pollen peaks, or due to the ArcelorMittal steelworks and nearby coking plant complex in the Ostrava-Karviná coal basin; a change of season or a spell of wind usually clears things up again.

Are air quality levels in Ostrava based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere.
