Xanxerê's air quality reflects the Santa Catarina southwestern plateau at 840 metres, with vehicle emissions from the BR-282 and surrounding soybean, corn, and poultry processing agribusiness contributing local sources. The elevated plateau position aids background dispersal, while dry season burning from surrounding agricultural land contributes seasonal PM2.5 variation and cold subtropical winter temperature inversions in the southern Brazilian highlands add seasonal wood-burning PM2.5 throughout the heating season.
