Sobral's air quality reflects its position in the Ceará semi-arid interior near the Acaraú river valley, with vehicle emissions from the BR-222 and the surrounding light industrial and agricultural base contributing local sources. The flat Ceará sertão generally provides reasonable wind dispersal on most days, while drought conditions and dry season burning from surrounding semi-arid Caatinga landscape contribute elevated PM10 and PM2.5 episodes, and the lack of consistent Atlantic trade wind penetration makes Sobral more susceptible to dry season smoke accumulation than coastal Ceará cities.
