Sete Lagoas's air quality reflects its position in the Minas Gerais central plateau at 761 metres north of Belo Horizonte, with vehicle emissions from the BR-040 and the steel, automotive parts, and food processing industry contributing elevated PM2.5 and NOₓ. The elevated karst plateau position aids background dispersal compared to the enclosed Belo Horizonte basin to the south, while dry season burning from surrounding Cerrado agricultural land contributes seasonal variation between June and September.
