São Leopoldo's air quality reflects its position in the greater Porto Alegre metropolitan area's northern industrial corridor in the Vale dos Sinos leather and footwear manufacturing region, with tannery and leather processing operations generating elevated VOCs, ammonia, and PM2.5 alongside vehicle traffic on the RS-020. The flat Sinos river valley provides limited dispersal, while the tanning industry's distinctive chemical emissions make the Vale dos Sinos corridor one of southern Brazil's more chemically complex air quality environments.
