Santo Agostinho's air quality reflects its position on the Pernambuco coastal industrial corridor south of Recife, with the Complexo Industrial Portuário de Suape — one of Brazil's largest industrial port complexes — generating significant petrochemical, steel, and port-related emissions alongside vehicle traffic on the BR-101. Atlantic sea breezes generally provide coastal ventilation, but the industrial concentration of the Suape complex makes this one of northeastern Brazil's most industrially impacted coastal municipalities.
