Russas' air quality reflects the Ceará semi-arid lower Jaguaribe valley, with vehicle emissions from the BR-116 and surrounding irrigated fruit farming and cattle operations contributing local sources. The Jaguaribe river valley's flat terrain provides reasonable dispersal, while drought conditions and Caatinga burning contribute seasonal PM10 elevation and the lower altitude of this coastal semi-arid valley reduces the beneficial trade wind ventilation compared to highland Ceará cities.
