Rio Grande's air quality reflects its position at the mouth of the Patos Lagoon in far southern Brazil, with the Port of Rio Grande's bulk cargo and fertiliser terminal operations and the surrounding Polo Naval industrial complex generating elevated PM2.5 and SO₂ alongside vehicle traffic on the BR-392. Consistent southerly Pampas winds from Argentina generally provide good maritime ventilation, while the industrial port concentration makes Rio Grande one of Rio Grande do Sul's more industrially impacted coastal municipalities.
