Piracicaba's air quality reflects its position in the São Paulo state sugarcane belt on the Piracicaba river, with vehicle emissions from the SP-304 corridor combining with seasonal sugarcane burning that historically generated significant PM2.5 episodes. Mechanised harvesting has reduced but not eliminated the burning contribution, while the river valley topography can concentrate vehicle and industrial emissions under calm conditions in this mid-sized interior São Paulo city.
