Picos' air quality reflects the Piauí semi-arid interior Sertão, with vehicle emissions from the BR-316 and surrounding livestock farming and light manufacturing contributing local sources. Drought conditions and Caatinga burning contribute seasonal PM10 elevation, while the Gurguéia river valley provides limited ventilation corridors and the flat semi-arid terrain generally allows reasonable wind dispersal on most days throughout the year.
