Paulo Afonso's air quality benefits from its position on the São Francisco River at 280 metres, with the Chesf hydroelectric complex contributing modest industrial sources alongside vehicle emissions from the BR-110. The São Francisco valley's channelling of prevailing winds provides generally reasonable ventilation, while drought conditions and Caatinga burning contribute seasonal PM10 episodes across the semi-arid landscape.
