Paracatu's air quality reflects the Minas Gerais northwestern Paracatu plateau at 700 metres, with vehicle emissions from the BR-040 and the Kinross Paracatu gold mining operations — one of the world's largest open-pit gold mines — generating elevated mineral dust PM10 and cyanide processing byproducts alongside primary vehicle sources. The elevated plateau position aids background dispersal, while the gold mining operations represent the most distinctive local emission source throughout the year.
