Palmas' air quality faces severe seasonal challenges as the capital of Tocantins at the heart of the Central Brazilian Cerrado, with dry season burning from surrounding agricultural deforestation generating intense PM2.5 episodes between June and October that routinely produce some of Brazil's highest seasonal readings. Vehicle emissions from the planned city's road network contribute year-round, while the flat Tocantins river plain generally provides reasonable ventilation during the wet season.
