Ouro Prêto's air quality benefits from its elevated position in the Minas Gerais iron quadrilateral highlands at 1,179 metres, with the surrounding Serra do Espinhaço providing relatively clean mountain air for this UNESCO World Heritage baroque mining city. Vehicle emissions from the BR-356 and the Alunorte alumina refinery and surrounding industrial operations contribute local sources, while the elevated mountain position generally provides better conditions than the lower iron quadrilateral mining valleys below.
