Mariana's air quality reflects the Gualaxo do Norte river valley in the Minas Gerais iron quadrilateral at 694 metres, with vehicle emissions from the MG-129 and the surrounding iron ore mining and processing operations — Mariana being the site of the catastrophic 2015 Fundão tailings dam collapse — generating elevated iron mineral PM10 and mining dust. The surrounding Espinhaço highlands create topographic variation, while the mining industry's pervasive influence dominates the local air quality profile throughout the year.
