Vehicle emissions from the urban sprawl contribute year-round, while the industrial Zona Franca de Manaus free trade zone adds manufacturing emissions, and the flat central Amazon basin's calm dry season conditions allow smoke to accumulate for extended periods across the metropolitan area.
