Magé's air quality is significantly influenced by its position in the Recôncavo da Guanabara industrial zone east of Rio de Janeiro, with the Refinaria Duque de Caxias (REDUC) petroleum refinery complex and the surrounding Petrobras infrastructure generating elevated SO₂, NOₓ, and benzene alongside heavy traffic on the BR-040. The enclosed Guanabara Bay basin and the surrounding Serra dos Órgãos ridgeline create severe topographic enclosure that concentrates industrial emissions across the bay's eastern shore under calm conditions.
