Lagoa Santa's air quality benefits from its elevated position in the Minas Gerais karst plateau at 761 metres north of Belo Horizonte, with vehicle emissions from the BR-040 and the surrounding limestone quarrying, university research, and residential character contributing local sources. The Belo Horizonte basin's poor dispersal characteristics partially influence this northern metropolitan corridor, while the elevated karst plateau position generally provides marginally better conditions than the enclosed metropolitan basin below.
