Januária's air quality reflects the São Francisco River valley in the northern Minas Gerais semi-arid region, with vehicle emissions from the BR-135 and surrounding cattle ranching, irrigated farming, and agribusiness operations contributing local sources. The São Francisco valley's channelling of northerly and southerly winds provides generally reasonable ventilation, while drought conditions and Caatinga burning contribute seasonal PM10 elevation across the semi-arid region throughout the dry season.
