Janaúba's air quality reflects the northern Minas Gerais semi-arid Sertão at 516 metres in the upper São Francisco valley, with vehicle emissions from the BR-251 and surrounding irrigated fruit farming, cattle, and light manufacturing contributing local sources. The São Francisco valley provides reasonable wind dispersal corridors, while drought conditions and Caatinga burning contribute seasonal PM10 elevation across the semi-arid northern Minas Gerais region throughout the dry season.
