Jacobina's air quality reflects the Bahia semi-arid Sertão at 390 metres in the Chapada Diamantina foothills, with vehicle emissions from the BR-324 and surrounding gold mining operations and agricultural activity contributing local sources. Mining dust from the Jacobina gold mine operations represents the most distinctive local PM10 source, while Caatinga burning contributes seasonal variation and the elevated position aids background dispersal compared to the semi-arid lowlands below.
