Itajaí's air quality reflects its position as Santa Catarina's main port city at the mouth of the Itajaí-Açu river, with the Itajaí Port complex and its container terminal operations generating elevated diesel NOₓ and PM2.5 alongside vehicle traffic on the BR-101. Atlantic sea breezes from the Santa Catarina coast provide coastal ventilation, while the Serra do Mar escarpment inland creates topographic enclosure that can concentrate port and valley emissions under calm offshore wind conditions.
