Ipatinga's air quality faces significant industrial challenges from the Usiminas steelworks, one of Brazil's largest flat steel producers dominating the Vale do Aço industrial corridor in eastern Minas Gerais with elevated PM10, SO₂, and heavy metals. The Rio Doce valley topographic enclosure between the Espinhaço and Mantiqueira ranges concentrates industrial emissions under calm conditions, making Ipatinga one of Brazil's most industrially impacted urban air quality environments alongside neighbouring Coronel Fabriciano and Timóteo.
