Guarapuava's air quality reflects its position on the elevated Paraná second plateau at 1,095 metres, giving it some of southern Brazil's best natural background dispersal characteristics. Vehicle emissions from the BR-277 and the surrounding pine timber, soybean, and corn agribusiness industry contribute local sources, while the elevated plateau position aids dispersal and dry season burning from surrounding agricultural and forest management operations contributes seasonal PM2.5 variation between June and September.
