Guaíba's air quality reflects the greater Porto Alegre metropolitan area's southern industrial corridor, with vehicle emissions from the RS-150 and the surrounding Guaíba power plant and petrochemical operations contributing elevated industrial PM2.5 alongside local vehicle sources. The Guaíba lake estuary provides limited ventilation, while the flat southern Brazilian coastal plain and winter temperature inversions can concentrate industrial and vehicle emissions under calm conditions.
