Extrema's air quality benefits from its elevated position in the Serra da Mantiqueira highlands at 957 metres on the Minas Gerais-São Paulo border, with the surrounding Atlantic Forest mountain setting providing relatively clean conditions compared to the metropolitan lowlands. Vehicle emissions from the Fernão Dias highway BR-381 and the surrounding pharmaceutical and technology research corridor contribute local sources, while the elevated mountain position generally maintains better conditions than the São Paulo metropolitan average on most days.
