Cuiabá's air quality faces severe seasonal challenges as the capital of Mato Grosso at the gateway to the Pantanal, with dry season burning from surrounding Amazon and Cerrado agricultural deforestation generating some of Brazil's highest seasonal PM2.5 concentrations during July through September. The Cuiabá river valley's topographic enclosure worsens accumulation under calm conditions during the burning season.
