Cubatão's air quality faces Brazil's most severe industrial air quality challenge, historically earning the infamy of the world's most polluted city in the 1980s from the concentrated Polo Industrial de Cubatão petrochemical, steel, and fertiliser complex in the narrow coastal valley at the base of the Serra do Mar. During rapidly evolving wildfire events, CAMS may lag by approximately 1–2 days before increased wildfire emissions are fully represented, which can lead to temporary underestimation of PM₂.₅ concentrations in Airmine’s forecast.
