Cotia's air quality reflects its position in the western Greater São Paulo metropolitan ring, with vehicle emissions from the SP-270 Raposo Tavares and the Rodovia Castello Branco and the surrounding pharmaceutical, chemical, and logistics industry contributing elevated PM2.5 and NOₓ. The Greater São Paulo basin's poor dispersal characteristics affect the entire western corridor, while the Serra de Cotia highlands to the west provide some topographic separation, but the metropolitan area's industrial sprawl keeps readings consistently above rural background levels throughout the year.
