Caxias's air quality reflects its position in the Baixada Fluminense industrial corridor of Rio de Janeiro state, with vehicle emissions from the BR-040 and the surrounding Duque de Caxias petroleum refinery and chemical complex generating elevated SO₂, benzene, and industrial PM2.5. The Guanabara Bay basin's enclosed topography and the surrounding Serra dos Órgãos ridgeline create severe topographic concentration of industrial and vehicle emissions, making the Baixada Fluminense one of Rio de Janeiro state's most persistently polluted metropolitan corridors throughout the year.
