Catu's air quality reflects the Bahia Recôncavo petroleum zone, with the Petrobras RLAM Landulpho Alves refinery nearby — one of Brazil's largest — and surrounding petroleum extraction operations generating elevated industrial SO₂, benzene, and PM2.5 alongside vehicle traffic on the BA-093. Atlantic trade winds from the Bahia coast provide background ventilation, while the refinery's proximity makes Catu one of northeastern Brazil's more industrially influenced suburban environments throughout the year.
